After learning the anatomy of the guitar, let's work on proper handling of the instrument to get the most out of your playing. Sit comfortably, with your back against the back of a preferably armless chair. Sit up straight and do not slouch. This will help to avoid complications in your playing as well as a sore back!
Pick up your guitar, and hold it against your body with the neck of the guitar parallel to the floor. If you are right-handed, you will hold the guitar so the headstock points to the left. In this seated position, the body of the guitar will typically rest on your right leg, which is the farthest from the headstock. If you are a left-handed player reverse the above process, and of course make sure you have a left-handed guitar.
